The piece is based on a Ukrainian folk lullaby that I recorded in the early 1980s. It was sung by an elderly lady in the countryside of the Kharkiv region. In 2022 this region was occupied by the Russians, then Ukrainian forces liberated it, but later there were brutal battles again in this area. So this simple and naive folk tune got an unexpected tragic context. Nevertheless, in my piece I try to find a positive idea that finds its way through a series of dramatic events.
